Resistance against the acquisition of ancestral farmland for a proposed five-star Hyatt luxury resort near Kaziranga National Park continues to intensify, with local Adivasi families declaring they will not back down despite the arrest and detention of Indigenous rights defender Pranab Doley.
Doley, the convenor of the Greater Kaziranga Land and Human Rights Protection Committee (GKLHRPC), was arrested on July 12, 2026, in Guwahati and subsequently remanded to judicial custody in connection with protests at Inglay Pathar. The state government recently transferred 30 bighas of farmland to the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) to facilitate the Hyatt hotel project.
However, affected families claim the land has been cultivated by their ancestors for generations and allege that authorities reclassified and seized their plots without transparent public consultation or consent. Local residents believe Doley was targeted to suppress community mobilization, but affected villagers maintain they will continue protesting to defend their land, livelihoods, and the surrounding eco-sensitive wildlife corridors.
