A court in Shillong has remanded three top leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to 14 days of judicial custody on Thursday. The decision comes after intense violence erupted during the organization's black-flag motorbike rally on Wednesday.
Key Arrests & Charges
Police arrested the three senior leaders around midnight following the unrest:
- Raymond Kharjana (KSU President)
- Reuben Najiar (General Secretary)
- Pynkmenlang Sanmiet (Vice-President)
They have been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to unlawful assembly, causing hurt, and damaging public property.
Widespread Unrest & Property Damage
The rally escalated into severe violence across Shillong, leading to significant destruction:
- Vehicle Destruction: At least 31 vehicles were reported damaged throughout the city.
- Targeted Attacks: Out-of-state vehicles were specifically targeted by perpetrators, and a government vehicle was set on fire.
- VIP Vehicles Affected: The vehicles of BJP MLA AL Hek and Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui were among those damaged.
- Casualties: Multiple people sustained injuries during the clashes.
Police Operations
Following the incident, law enforcement cordoned off the KSU headquarters located in Jaiaw Pdeng. Police reportedly used tear gas to disperse an aggressive crowd that gathered to oppose the operation.
