Arunachal Pradesh has achieved a major milestone in environmental conservation with Glaw Lake being designated as the state's first Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention. The announcement was made by Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav, who said the recognition would strengthen biodiversity conservation, improve water and climate security, and support sustainable livelihoods. The designation also increases India's total number of Ramsar Sites to 101.
Located within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in the Eastern Himalayas, Glaw Lake is a pristine freshwater wetland known for its rich biodiversity. Fed by perennial mountain streams and surrounded by dense forests, the area is home to over 150 tree species and 49 orchid species. The Ramsar status is expected to boost conservation efforts and promote the sustainable management of this ecologically significant wetland.
