Dr. Varnali Deka, a 2009-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has become the first woman IAS officer from Assam to be empanelled for appointment to a Joint Secretary or equivalent post within the Government of India. Prior to moving on central deputation in August 2025—where she currently serves as Director in the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs—Dr. Deka served as Commissioner and Secretary in Assam’s General Administration Department. During her state tenure, she served as Deputy Commissioner in Barpeta, Golaghat, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, and Nalbari, while also holding key leadership posts including Vice Chairman and CEO of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority. Recognized with the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration and the National e-Governance Award, her empanelment opens the pathway for senior executive assignments across Union ministries.
