Driving licence address change to be simpler and cost-free
The Central Government has proposed draft rules aimed at streamlining the process for changes to driving licence details, including address updates. According to the new draft, applicants may no longer have to pay fees for certain services related to their driving licences. Additionally, the licensing authorities would be required to decide on requests within 15 days.
Under the proposal, if an address change request is not responded to within the stipulated 15-day period, it will be deemed automatically approved after 30 days. This auto-approval provision is intended to reduce delays and provide faster service to licence holders.
The revised rules form part of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) draft, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing ease of doing business and digital governance in transport services. By cutting fees and setting clear timelines, the Centre aims to reduce procedural hurdles for citizens.
These proposals still require final approval and a period of public consultation before adoption. However, if implemented, they could benefit millions of Indian drivers by making licence updates quicker, simpler, and more affordable.
