In Brief
- BioWare is officially shutting its doors, marking the end of a legendary three-decade run in the gaming industry.
- Early development on the next Mass Effect game has been permanently cancelled.
- The broader restructuring involves cutting approximately 400 jobs (about 3% of EA's total workforce), which includes roughly 50 positions at BioWare.
End of an Era for Role-Playing Games
Electronic Arts announced a major restructuring initiative that includes closing down BioWare, the acclaimed developer responsible for shaping modern role-playing video games over the past 30 years. The decision comes in the wake of commercial underperformance from recent releases, such as Dragon Age: The Veilguard, coupled with a shifting corporate strategy following EA's recent privatization.
In an internal memo, EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson noted that the company is realigning its resources toward long-term growth and large-scale opportunities, leading to the cancellation of the studio's early-stage Mass Effect project.
Restructuring and Impact
The corporate changes will eliminate roughly 400 positions across the organization, accounting for about 3% of EA's global workforce. Approximately 50 of these cuts directly impact the BioWare team in Edmonton. Company management stated they are working to assist affected personnel in exploring alternative opportunities within other divisions of the company.
