Former Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh has accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of illegalities in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across India.
Singh argued the nationwide revision lacks sufficient legal or constitutional basis and questioned the validity of the exercise under the Election Commission's direction. He also described the Supreme Court's decision upholding the general SIR exercise as incorrect.
He urged Opposition parties to unite and challenge the SIR process, claiming that a coordinated response is essential to oppose what he views as irregularities in revising voter lists. In an open letter, Singh questioned whether India would remain a democracy and expressed concerns about the exercise's potential impact on the electoral process and voter rolls.
Singh further called on Opposition parties to boycott elections until the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners resign, combining legal objections with a broader call for political action against Election Commission leadership.
His statements have intensified political debate about the nationwide voter-roll revision and its implications. However, these allegations of illegality and lack of authority are Singh's assertions and should be distinguished from established rulings by courts or competent authorities.
