Nations around the globe are marking World Post Day today, October 9, 2026, celebrating the enduring public service of postal workers and the vital infrastructure connecting communities worldwide.
The annual observance marks the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) on October 9, 1874, in Bern, Switzerland. Established to facilitate the free flow of international mail, the UPU became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1948, and the date was officially declared World Post Day at the 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo.
Under the 2026 theme, "One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities," the United Nations and the UPU are focusing on the transformation of traditional post offices into essential hubs for digital inclusion, financial services, and logistics.
"With over 660,000 offices and 4.6 million staff, the post connects communities and provides essential services that strive to leave no one behind," stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres in an official message, emphasizing the human connection provided by postal networks alongside digital advancements.
Coinciding with the global event, postal administrations worldwide are holding special events, including philatelic exhibitions, youth letter-writing award ceremonies, and the launch of new citizen-centric services. In India, the Ministry of Communications initiated National Postal Week (October 9–15) to showcase modernized postal centers aimed at expanding digital banking and rural access.
The week-long observances will continue globally through mid-October, highlighting upcoming initiatives in logistics automation, cross-border e-commerce, and sustainable delivery solutions.
