Indian student activist Umar Khalid has received the 2026 Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk, announced on October 8, 2026. The award was presented at a special ceremony at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Khalid was recognised in the Asia and the Pacific category for his advocacy for the rights of students, minorities and citizens.

The award is presented by Front Line Defenders, an Ireland-based human rights organisation established in 2001. It recognises human rights defenders who make outstanding contributions to protecting the rights of others, often while facing serious risks. The organisation highlighted concerns about Khalid’s prolonged detention and the challenges faced by people advocating for civil liberties and peaceful dissent.

Khalid, a former Jawaharlal Nehru University student, was arrested on September 13, 2020, in connection with the investigation into the February 2020 Delhi riots. He remains in custody and could not attend the award ceremony in Dublin. Four other activists from Angola, Brazil, Serbia and Iran were also honoured in the 2026 awards, representing different regions of the world.
