India and Canada have renewed their commitment to finalize a bilateral trade agreement by the end of 2026, underscoring a boost in economic relations between the two nations. This was announced in a joint statement by Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Canadian Finance and National Revenue Minister François-Philippe Champagne after the inaugural India-Canada Finance Ministers’ Economic and Financial Dialogue held in Toronto. The dialogue offered a forum for both countries to explore deeper economic and financial cooperation. India also expressed its willingness to commence negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty at the earliest, aiming to strengthen the investment framework.
This treaty is expected to complement the trade agreement by facilitating increased investment flows and providing clearer guidelines for businesses in each other's markets. The reaffirmed end-2026 deadline highlights the commitment of both countries to advance their broader economic partnership. Beyond trade talks, initiating investment treaty discussions signals an intention to broaden collaboration across various economic fronts. The inaugural finance dialogue is set to serve as a structured platform for ongoing discussions and closer coordination between India and Canada.
