India is intensifying efforts to secure lithium, a critical mineral, by pursuing overseas resources. The Union Mines Ministry is in talks with Australia and Chile to acquire lithium blocks, while also aiming to expand its holdings in Argentina. Union Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy said that due to limited domestic lithium reserves, India is looking abroad for resources. The country has already acquired five lithium blocks in Argentina and plans to acquire five additional blocks there.
The government is also seeking to increase private sector participation in mineral exploration, especially for overseas opportunities. This move aims to strengthen India's access to critical raw materials and create a more secure supply chain. Lithium is essential for battery manufacturing, and securing overseas supplies forms part of India's broader strategy to enhance access to critical minerals. Mr. Reddy highlighted these initiatives while speaking to reporters at the third edition of CII's Global Summit on Advanced Materials, Critical Minerals & Metals.
