The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has directed Pramerica Life Insurance and Edelweiss Life Insurance not to open any new places of business for six months. Separate orders were issued on August 20 after the regulator found that both insurers exceeded the prescribed Expenses of Management (EoM) limits for 2024–25. The action came following IRDAI’s off-site monitoring, a review of the submissions from the two insurers, and subsequent enforcement proceedings.
Both companies were warned for failing to stay within the prescribed EoM limits and were consequently barred from opening new branches during the six-month period.The EoM limits are designed to ensure insurers manage operating expenses within the regulatory framework. IRDAI’s decision highlights the importance of financial discipline and compliance in the life insurance sector. By restricting new business locations, the regulator aims to enforce adherence to its norms while maintaining ongoing supervisory oversight.
