Chennai, formerly Madras, has evolved from a colonial trading port into one of India’s key global business and industrial hubs. Its economic roots lie in trade, manufacturing, and institutional development, with a focus on industrialisation from the late 19th century. In 1899, Alfred Chatterton of the College of Engineering, Guindy, was appointed to promote industrial and technical growth. The government also surveyed industries to identify opportunities for expansion, laying the foundation for sustained industrial development. Madras grew into a major manufacturing and engineering centre, supported by its port, educational institutions, skilled workforce, and industrial ecosystem.
It expanded into sectors like automobiles, electronics, chemicals, and textiles, attracting domestic and international companies and developing a diverse economy. Today, Chennai’s economy includes multinational corporations, Global Capability Centres, semiconductor investments, aerospace and defence firms, footwear manufacturers, startups, and local enterprises.
