Assam continues to face severe, unprecedented flooding—particularly across Upper Assam districts like Sivasagar and Jorhat—affecting over 4.45 lakh people across six districts and inundating 631 villages.
State BJP leaders and government officials report that relief operations are being actively intensified, with the party distributing relief materials worth ₹12 to ₹15 crore and setting up 184 relief camps sheltering nearly 28,700 displaced residents. Labour Welfare Minister Rameswar Teli noted that around 27 tea gardens have been hit and mentioned reports of 68 deaths. However, BJP MLA Chakradhar Gogoi cautioned that the official death toll could rise further as search, recovery, and cleanup efforts continue through heavy mud and silt.
In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that post-mortem examinations for flood victims will be waived to prevent unnecessary bureaucratic delays for grieving families and to expedite the distribution of ex-gratia assistance.
