Captain Shiva Chauhan, who made history in January 2023 as the first woman officer of the Indian Army to be operationally deployed at Kumar Post on the Siachen Glacier, continues to inspire defence aspirants across the country. Her achievement marked a significant milestone in the growing role of women in the armed forces.
Hailing from Udaipur, Rajasthan, Chauhan overcame personal and financial hardships after losing her father at the age of 11. A Civil Engineering graduate, she secured All India Rank 1 in the Services Selection Board (SSB) selection process before being commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in 2021. After completing specialised training for high-altitude operations, she led an engineering team at Kumar Post, ensuring the maintenance of military infrastructure and operational support in one of the world's toughest environments.
Captain Chauhan's inspiring journey continues to encourage young Indians, especially women, to pursue careers in the Indian Armed Forces, proving that courage, competence and dedication know no gender.
