Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar officially unveiled the inaugural Guwahati International Marathon during a press conference on Thursday, September 10. Promoted by PMG Sports LLP with the Assam Tourism Development Corporation as state sponsor, the flagship running event is scheduled for February 7, 2027. The event boasts a total prize purse of ₹1.25 crore—positioning it among the premier prize-money road races in India—and expects to attract around 12,000 elite and amateur runners from across the world.

During the launch, Gavaskar presented "Bib #1" to CM Sarma as a symbol of endorsement. Sarma highlighted that the marathon marks a key milestone in establishing Guwahati as a major hub for sports tourism. Badmintion champion P.V. Sindhu will serve as the event's brand ambassador. The World Athletics-certified course will start at Judges Field, taking runners across the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu towards IIT Guwahati and back. Registrations officially opened online on September 11, 2026.
