Acclaimed Assamese singer and composer Joi Barua has joined Cosmic Rhapsody, a global multimedia project connecting performing arts with NASA’s astrophysics research. Created by Dr. Susan Lim and Dr. Christina Teenz Tan, the project tells the story of a human and an AI traveling through space, using live orchestral music, animation, and pop songs to explore cosmic phenomena.
The artistic concept found a natural alignment with NASA’s Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) mission—a wide-field gamma-ray space telescope studying how supernovae synthesize and scatter elements throughout the universe. Barua composed the core melodies for "Star Among the Cosmic Clouds" and "Confetti Storm", and co-composed "Confetti Star-Ion" alongside chief orchestrator Manu Martin. Joined by Assamese director and animator Samudra Kajal Saikia, who is creating the visual stardust animations, the performance is set to premiere at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2027 ahead of the COSI mission launch from Cape Canaveral.
