The Joint Action Committee (JAC) has renewed its demand for a judicial inquiry into the June 8 accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant's Steel Melt Shop, which claimed the lives of 10 workers. The committee is calling for an independent investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy and fix accountability.
The JAC has also sought ₹1 crore in compensation for the family of each deceased worker and ₹50 lakh for every injured worker from the State government. In addition, it has urged authorities to halt the proposed privatisation of the steel plant, carry out a comprehensive safety audit, and strengthen workplace safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The protesters alleged that negligence by the governments and plant management led to the tragedy and vowed to continue their agitation until justice is delivered to the affected families.
