Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has made a surprise return to the England cricket setup after being appointed specialist mentor for the men's white-ball teams ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Joining head coach Brendon McCullum's coaching staff, Pietersen will begin his stint during the series against Sri Lanka before accompanying the squad on subsequent white-ball tours to Australia and South Africa. Marking his first official role in England colors since his international retirement in 2014, Pietersen expressed that wearing the national uniform again is a "profound honour and a deeply special moment". He will work alongside a wider support team that includes Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel, and Sarah Taylor.
