A New Era for Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians franchise announced a major leadership transition on Saturday, October 24, 2026, naming franchise stalwart Kieron Pollard as their new head coach.
Pollard replaces Mahela Jayawardene, whose departure followed a challenging IPL 2026 season that saw the five-time champions finish ninth in the standings.
Deep Franchise Roots
Pollard is deeply embedded in the "MI culture," having played 189 matches for the franchise as a ferocious lower-order hitter and brilliant fielder. He was an integral part of all five of Mumbai Indians' championship-winning campaigns as a player.
Following his retirement from the IPL, he seamlessly transitioned into the coaching setup as the team's batting coach. Franchise executives noted that his intimate knowledge of modern T20 dynamics and long-standing connection with the team's core philosophy made him the natural choice to lead the rebuild.
"Pollard has a deep understanding of Mumbai Indians, its culture and the demands of competing at the highest level," the franchise stated in a media release.
Looking Ahead to IPL 2027
Pollard's appointment comes at a crucial juncture for the team. With the upcoming mini-auction scheduled to take place in Goa, the newly minted head coach will immediately focus on squad evaluation, strategy formulation, and resolving tactical gaps exposed during the previous season to steer MI back to championship contention.
