Nepal marked a national day of mourning on Monday, September 7, honoring the victims of a catastrophic flood and mudslide along its Himalayan border with China. Flags flew at half-mast at home and diplomatic missions abroad to observe the 13th day since the disaster—the traditional conclusion of Hindu mourning rituals.
Scale of Destruction
On August 26, a glacier collapsed in the Himalayas, sending a massive torrent of mud and debris surging across the border of Nepal and Tibet:
- Casualties: Over 1,380 confirmed dead across the region.
- Missing: More than 5,500 people remain unaccounted for.
- Tibet Impact: Chinese authorities recovered 12 more bodies over the weekend as cross-border searches continue.
Rescue Efforts & Operations
Despite severe destruction, search teams have pulled off four miraculous rescues in recent days, including two hydropower workers, a Chinese national, and a local Nepali woman. Rescue crews are focusing on regional hydropower facilities, where more survivors may be trapped.
In Nuwakot district, security personnel safely evacuated 923 prisoners to higher ground just moments before floodwaters submerged the local jail, while authorities successfully recaptured 50 inmates who attempted to flee during the initial surge.
