The Union Environment Ministry has notified the constitution of two interim state-level bodies responsible for issuing environmental clearances (EC) for projects. These bodies will automatically assume duties whenever the terms of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAA) and State Expert Appraisal Committees (SEAC) expire.

The notification specifies that these two bodies are a temporary measure designed to maintain the continuous operation of SEIAA and SEAC for evaluating projects. Under this arrangement, while large-scale Category A projects are sent directly to the Central government for approval, smaller Category B projects will be cleared by these interim state-level bodies.
