India is developing a new framework to allow AI agents to make small digital payments on behalf of users without requiring manual approval for every transaction.
If launched nationwide, the initiative could make India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) one of the world's largest networks supporting autonomous AI transactions.
Key Highlights
- Unified Protocol: Operated via the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the framework is set to unveil at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai.
- Early Use Cases: Initial applications will target frequent, low-value purchases like groceries and e-commerce, where AI can auto-order based on discounts or price limits.
- Leveraging UPI Tech: The system will adapt tools like UPI Circle (delegated authority) and Reserve Pay, while banks review current 10,000-rupee (~$105 USD) fund-blocking limits.
- Built-in Guardrails: Users can set spending caps, audit trails, and identity checks, backed by a dedicated liability framework.
- Industry Push: Global card networks like Mastercard and Visa, along with local fintechs like Pine Labs, are also rolling out similar AI-driven payment protocols in India.
