NTPC Bongaigaon on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, shared updates on the expansion of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), during a media interaction. The programme supports girls from rural and underprivileged backgrounds by fostering confidence, leadership, and educational opportunities.
Arnab Maitra, Executive Director and Head of Project, said GEM started in 2018 across three NTPC sites with 392 girls and has since grown into a nationwide residential programme reaching over 16,000 participants. The initiative supports the government's Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.
At NTPC Bongaigaon, GEM began in 2022 and has reached 210 girls across four editions, increasing this year's cohort from 40 to 50 participants. The month-long residential programme offers academic support, spoken English, digital literacy, health awareness, self-defence, sports, arts, personality development, leadership training, environmental education, and interaction with professionals.
Additionally, 10% of attendees are awarded free education at the NTPC township school based on evaluations, ensuring continued support beyond the programme. Maitra acknowledged the collective efforts of employees, volunteers, educators, medical experts, partner organisations, parents, local communities, educational institutions, and district authorities.
