The Kamrup district administration has announced that the old Saraighat Bridge will remain closed to all vehicular traffic for two months from July 13 to facilitate urgent repair and maintenance work.
The decision was taken after the Northeast Frontier Railway informed the administration about significant structural issues with the bridge. During the closure, traffic in both directions will be diverted to the new Saraighat Bridge.
Heavy vehicles from lower Assam will be halted at Baihata Chariali and diverted via Tezpur, while those travelling from upper Assam towards lower Assam will be diverted from Kaliabor. Dividers will be installed on the new bridge, overtaking will not be allowed, and parking will be prohibited along the stretch from Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra to the bridge during the repair period.
