In 2025, India witnessed an increase in road crash deaths, which rose by 3.5% compared to the previous year, reaching 183,382 fatalities. The state of Uttar Pradesh recorded the most significant rise, with deaths climbing from 24,118 in 2024 to 27,550 in 2025.
To align with UN regulations, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways notified draft rules requiring cybersecurity and software update management systems for two/three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and goods carriers. Vehicle prototypes will still require testing and type approval under Rule 126 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
