Several vessels under international sanctions have been arriving at Alang in Gujarat for recycling, raising concerns about the enforcement of maritime sanctions. The U.S. government seized multiple tankers during its December blockade of Venezuela, including Marinera, which was pursued for nearly a month before being seized off Iceland, and Lileo. In August, both vessels were sold to GMS, a major buyer of ships for demolition, and subsequently brought to Alang. Marinera and Lileo are among more than 1,000 vessels sanctioned by the U.S.
The arrival of sanctioned ships at Alang is not limited to vessels sold by the U.S. government. Several ships owned by sanctioned entities have also arrived in recent months. One example is Double In, a Very Large Gas Carrier sanctioned by the U.S. for handling Iranian cargoes. According to Lloyd’s List, it reached Alang for recycling after ownership was transferred to a shell company, demonstrating how changes in ownership can allow sanctioned vessels to enter the recycling chain.
