The Tamil Nadu government has proposed an integrated memorial complex and library on a portion of the University Union Grounds in Chetpet, Chennai, which belongs to the University of Madras. The complex is intended to honor Queen Velu Nachiyar, Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, B.R. Ambedkar, K. Kamaraj, and Anjalai Ammal, identified as ideological leaders of the ruling TVK party.
The proposal has faced objections from some faculty and staff of the University of Madras, physical education teachers from affiliated colleges, and sports enthusiasts. The grounds, located on Spur Tank Road, are widely used by university and affiliated-college athletes, as well as other educational institutions, for sports meets, training, and athletic activities.
Opponents are concerned that dedicating part of the grounds to a permanent memorial may reduce space available for sports, potentially impacting training and sporting programs. This has sparked a debate over the use of university land, highlighting the need to balance cultural commemoration with preserving key sports facilities and open spaces in Chennai.
