The Tamil Nadu government has assured the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that from 2027 onwards, no Ganesh idols will be immersed in water bodies in the state. This commitment was made during the hearing of a petition seeking directions to prohibit the immersion of Ganesh idols due to the environmental harm caused by the practice.

Officials explained that the move is part of efforts to protect the state's water bodies from pollution resulting from idol immersions. The practice has raised environmental concerns over contamination caused by non-biodegradable materials and toxic paints used in idol making.

The state’s assurance comes as part of a broader initiative to promote eco-friendly and sustainable celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi. Authorities plan to encourage alternative methods such as symbolic or artificial immersion to reduce ecological impact.

The NGT is expected to further monitor the implementation of this decision to ensure compliance and environmental protection. Tamil Nadu’s stance reflects growing awareness and governmental responsibility towards ecological conservation during traditional festivals.
