Union Minister Ramdas Athawale announced that the Women’s Reservation Bill, which aims to increase women's representation in legislative bodies, along with the Delimitation Bill, is to be passed during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
This follows the defeat of a Constitution amendment bill in the Lok Sabha on April 17 during an extended session. The bill, proposing a women's legislative quota by 2029 and an increase in Lok Sabha seats, received 298 votes in favor and 230 against. However, it fell short of the two-thirds majority of 352 votes required, with 528 total votes cast.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, July 16, Athawale stated that with the NDA now holding a clear majority, the Women’s Reservation Bill will be introduced in the upcoming session to ensure women's quotas in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
