Virtual Taekwondo will make its official debut at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, becoming the first virtual sport approved by the Olympic Council of Asia for medal competition. Co-developed by World Taekwondo and Refract Technologies, the non-contact sport requires athletes to stand on adjacent 4x4-meter mats wearing VR headsets and motion-tracking sensors on their body. Sixteen athletes from across Asia will compete on October 2 at the Toyohashi City General Gymnasium in a mixed-gender, straight-knockout tournament.

Matches are contested over a best-of-three, 60-second round format. Rather than physical contact, sensor data calculates the speed and precision of kicks and strikes to reduce an opponent's 1,000-point health bar, awarding a round win via knockout or highest remaining health points. Headshots inflict double damage, while non-damaging punches fill a stun gauge that can leave opponents defenseless for three seconds. By removing physical size barriers, the discipline shifts competitive advantage to agility, endurance, and rapid-fire execution over sheer weight or force.
