An Indian-born female cheetah, identified as KGP12, gave birth to four cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav announced the development, calling it a historic moment for wildlife conservation. Field staff at Kuno spotted the newborn cubs and are currently monitoring the mother and offspring from a safe distance inside the park's enclosure.
The births occurred a day after India's Project Cheetah marked its four-year anniversary. Launched on September 17, 2022, the initiative has expanded from translocating big cats from Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana to establishing self-sustaining, Indian-born breeding generations. Out of 52 total cheetahs currently residing in India, 36 are Indian-born, signaling a key milestone in the long-term restoration of the species.
