Seven companies, including Zepto, Physics Wallah, and Anuj Jindal, were fined for misleading online business practices. Other firms penalised are FirstCry, PharmaEasy, McAfee, and SpiceJet.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) imposed a total penalty of Rs 20 lakh on these e-commerce platforms. They were found using 'dark patterns'—deceptive design tactics that manipulate consumer choices.
These actions follow the CCPA's November 2023 guidelines aimed at curbing misleading online interfaces that affect buying decisions.
"Subsequent to the Guidelines for the Prevention Dark Pattern 2023, CCPA has taken action against e-commerce platforms engaging in dark patterns and imposed a penalty to the tune of Rs 20 lakh," the authority said.
Additionally, notices have been served to InterGlobe Aviation and BookMyShow over similar concerns.
These measures highlight the regulator's efforts to promote transparency and protect consumers in India's growing online market. Authorities will continue monitoring and addressing violations to uphold trust and proper industry practices.
