Russian officials in Irkutsk, eastern Siberia, are investigating a suspected case of plague following the death of a laboratory worker at an anti-plague research institute. Local reports say 189 people have been placed under medical observation as a precaution while authorities track individuals who may have been exposed to the worker or related materials.
The WHO stated the worker died after developing severe pneumonia, but the cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed and laboratory testing is ongoing. The suspected infection is pneumonic plague, a serious form where Yersinia pestis infects the lungs and can spread through infectious respiratory droplets.
Russian health authorities have taken precautionary measures and described the situation in Irkutsk and nearby Shelekhov as stable. The investigation aims to confirm if plague caused the death, identify the infection source, and assess possible wider transmission.
Plague is a rare but potentially fatal bacterial infection naturally occurring among small mammals and their fleas. It can be treated effectively with antibiotics if detected early. The WHO has said that, based on current information, the risk to the general public appears low. Authorities continue monitoring those exposed and maintaining health surveillance during laboratory investigations.
