The assault occurred on the evening of September 19 along the Jamui-Lakhisarai border when a group of 6 to 7 men intercepted two Class 10 coaching students on a two-wheeler under the pretext of "moral policing". The group physically assaulted the teenage boy and sexually harassed and groped the teenage girl. After video footage recorded by one of the perpetrators began circulating on social media on September 21, Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal identified the victims via the registration plate of their vehicle and recorded their statements. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Dipti Monali was appointed to lead a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which subsequently arrested three suspects and identified the primary perpetrator.
The FIR charges the suspects under Sections 8 and 12 of the POCSO Act alongside corresponding sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for assault and outraging modesty. State authorities are investigating potential patrol lapses by local police officers stationed 3 kilometers from the crime site. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar formally requested a time-bound investigation and legal measures to remove the video footage from online platforms, while political opposition leaders called for strict law enforcement accountability across the state.
