Police in Assam’s Golaghat district have arrested a medical practitioner for her alleged involvement in a high-profile jailbreak conspiracy that enabled the prime accused in a notorious 2023 triple murder case to escape police custody.
The Escape Conspiracy & Arrests
The doctor, identified as Dr. Kaveri Kurmi, was arrested following allegations that she facilitated the hospital admission of the accused, Nazibur Rahman Bora, creating the window of opportunity required to carry out a planned escape.
Bora—who was undergoing treatment in the prisoner ward at Swahid Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital—fled the facility alongside two other inmates. Taking advantage of sleeping security personnel, the trio snatched cell keys, a guard's mobile phone, and a police motorcycle before fleeing into the early morning hours.
So far, law enforcement has taken multiple suspects into custody regarding the breach:
- Dr. Kaveri Kurmi (for orchestrating the hospital transfer)
- One police officer & two home guards (for security lapses and negligence)
- Hizbur Rahman (the accused’s brother, for suspected involvement in the conspiracy)
The Gruesome 2023 Triple Murder
The prisoner at the center of the manhunt, Nazibur Rahman Bora, is a mechanical engineer whose violent crime shocked the state of Assam.
- The Incident: On July 24, 2023, Bora brutally hacked his wife, Sanghamitra Ghosh, and her parents, Sanjeev Ghosh and Junu Ghosh, to death at their home in Golaghat.
- Motive & Surrender: The murders were the culmination of severe marital turmoil and domestic disputes following the couple’s elopement in 2020. Immediately after committing the crime, Bora walked to the local police station carrying his 9-month-old infant child and surrendered.
- High-Profile Case: The brutality of the crime prompted a visit from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who personally assured the surviving relatives that the case would undergo a fast-track trial.
A massive, multi-district manhunt and active investigation remain ongoing to recapture Bora and his fellow escapees while holding all co-conspirators accountable.
