Arunachalam (24), a resident of Amutha Nagar in Thoothukudi, passed away in the early hours of Thursday, July 23, 2026, while receiving treatment in the neurosurgery ward at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital (TKGMCH).
He had been arrested on July 17 by the Thoothukudi South police for the illegal sale of 120 liquor bottles, and following his release, his family admitted him to the hospital. Alleging that police brutality and custodial torture led to his death, his family members, along with former DMK Minister P. Geetha Jeevan, staged a protest outside the medical college.
