The protest by nursing candidates in Uttarakhand escalated on July 22 after four women allegedly attempted suicide outside the residence of state Health Minister Subodh Uniyal in Yamuna colony. Among them, one of the candidates, reportedly identified as Kiran Rawat, allegedly consumed phenyl and was rushed to the nearby (GDMC) hospital.
The protestors are demanding year-wise recruitment to nursing posts based on seniority, preference for local candidates in appointments, and the creation of at least 2,000 additional nursing posts in accordance with Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS), along with the long-pending demands. Nursing Ekta Manch president Naval Pundeer said the organisation had called off its over 150-day-long protest in May(2026) after receiving assurances from the Health Minister that their demands would be addressed. However, he alleged that the government failed to honour its promises, forcing the candidates to resume their agitation.
