The Assam Legislative Assembly has decided to introduce Hindi as its fourth official language, beginning with the upcoming Budget session. The announcement was made by Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass during a press conference on Sunday, July 5.
According to the Speaker, the decision was taken at a meeting of the General Purpose Committee held on Saturday. Hindi will now be used in the Assembly along with Assamese, English, and Bodo. Starting July 6, the first day of the Budget session of the 16th Assembly, the decision will be implemented. He said the move was made to give greater recognition to Hindi and make Assembly proceedings more inclusive.
The announcement also clarified that Bodo will continue as an official language of the Assembly. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed reports suggesting that Bodo would be removed. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to preserving and promoting the Bodo language and described it as an important part of Assam's cultural heritage.
The decision is expected to improve communication within the Assembly while reflecting the linguistic diversity of the state. The government believes the move will strengthen administrative accessibility without affecting the importance of the existing official languages.
