Eastern India has emerged as a frontrunner in obtaining Geographical Indication (GI) registrations. A Geographical Indication (GI) identifies products whose qualities or reputation are linked to a specific geographical origin. More than half of all registered GI products (53%) are handmade crafts and textiles (handicrafts). The next largest group is farming goods (agricultural products), which make up about 31%.
India currently has 822 registered GI products. The DPIIT(The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) Chair at WBNUJS and JHARCRAFT secured the maximum number of GI tags for West Bengal and Jharkhand, respectively.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of GI registrations among all states during the 2025-26 fiscal year, highlighting its growing prominence in preserving and promoting regional products.
