According to MoSPI’s latest Flash Report (June 2026), 1,847 monitored infrastructure projects in India have faced cost overruns totaling ₹4.92 lakh crore, pushing overall costs from ₹35.62 lakh crore to ₹40.54 lakh crore.
Despite these escalations, implementation remains on track with ₹21.97 lakh crore spent (54.18% of the total budget), ~39% of projects achieving over 80% physical progress, and 337 crossing 80% financial completion.
Transport and logistics account for the majority of the portfolio with 1,341 projects worth ₹22.32 lakh crore, followed by the energy sector at ₹10.38 lakh crore.
Key executing bodies include the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (1,022 projects worth ₹9.89 lakh crore) and the Ministry of Railways (255 projects worth ₹8.69 lakh crore), monitored through the PAIMANA platform across 17 central ministries.
