NMDC, India's state-owned iron ore producer, has committed to achieving Net Zero operational emissions by FY 2047 through a phased decarbonisation roadmap. The plan is split into three stages: short term (FY 2026–30), medium term (FY 2030–40), and long term (FY 2040–47).
The initial phase will establish the foundation for emissions reduction and promote sustainable practices. The medium term will expand efforts with broader deployment of emission-control and low-carbon technologies. The final stage targets achieving the operational Net Zero goal.
At the core of the roadmap are six strategies: energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, fleet electrification, adoption of low-carbon fuels, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), and demand-side management. NMDC aims for a minimum 90% reduction in operational emissions, addressing remaining emissions through offsetting measures over time.
Energy efficiency measures will reduce consumption and emissions, while renewable integration will lessen reliance on high-emission energy. Electrifying the mining fleet will lower emissions from vehicles and equipment. NMDC plans to adopt low-carbon fuels to transition from conventional energy sources.
CCUS will target emissions that are hard to eliminate through other means. Demand-side management will improve energy use and cut unnecessary consumption. This three-phase timeline spans over two decades, enabling gradual implementation. The approach combines at least a 90% direct emissions reduction with offsets for residual emissions, aiming to reach operational Net Zero by FY 2047.
