India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has notified the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) worth ₹62,500 crore. The scheme is designed to foster domestic mobile phone manufacturing and create a homegrown mobile brand by mid-2027.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the timeline and emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthen India’s mobile ecosystem. The MPMS is expected to attract large-scale investments and promote manufacturing within the country, leading to import substitution and employment generation.
The initiative forms part of India's broader strategy to become self-reliant in electronics manufacturing. It includes incentives and support for manufacturers producing mobile phones domestically, aiming to establish an indigenous brand competing globally.
Authorities highlighted that the scheme will help India transition from a primarily assembly-based industry to manufacturing complex mobile devices locally. This could boost exports while catering to domestic demand with India-branded mobile products.
