NASA’s newly launched Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has begun a three-month journey to its orbit one million miles from Earth. Lifting off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, the observatory is headed to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2) to survey the cosmos.
- 1,000x Faster Than Hubble: Roman combines sharp infrared optics with a massive field of view, allowing it to survey huge swaths of sky about 1,000 times faster than Hubble to study dark matter, dark energy, and exoplanets.
- 300-Megapixel View: Its primary Wide Field Instrument uses 18 advanced detectors to capture wide panoramas, generating a massive 1.4 terabytes of data daily.
- Exoplanet Tech: Roman carries an advanced Coronagraph Instrument designed to block intense starlight, enabling researchers to image Jupiter-sized worlds and prove concepts for future Earth-like planet hunters.
- What’s Next: After deploying key hardware and completing a three-month calibration period, NASA expects to release Roman’s first science images in early 2027.
