The 27-year-old national record holder accumulated a total of 7,934 points across ten events over two days of competition. Shankar led the field at the end of the opening day with 4,338 points, but slipped to third following the pole vault and javelin throw disciplines on day two. He guaranteed his podium spot by winning the final 1500m track race in 4:33.09.
The result earned Shankar his second consecutive Asian Games medal, adding to the silver he won at the 2023 Games in Hangzhou. Japan's Yuma Maruyama won the gold medal with an overall score of 8,123 points, while China's Chen Xinghua took the silver medal with 8,012 points. The performance also follows Shankar's bronze medal win in the decathlon at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games earlier in 2026.
