Over 50 students residing in the Gambari Sikhla Girls’ Hostel of the Central Institute of Technology (CIT), Kokrajhar, fell ill following dinner on Saturday night. They experienced symptoms consistent with food poisoning, including stomach pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting. The students have been receiving treatment at Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) since late Saturday night and are reported to be out of danger.
Following the incident, two senior Additional Deputy Commissioners from Kokrajhar district met with CIT authorities on Sunday to review the situation. Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty condemned the serving of poor-quality and unhygienic food at the hostel and announced that appropriate action would be taken against those responsible for food supply and management.
The district administration issued a show-cause notice to CIT Kokrajhar, and a magisterial inquiry may be ordered depending on the findings. Students have previously complained about poor food quality and hygiene at both boys’ and girls’ hostels, but allege no satisfactory action was taken. The incident has heightened concerns over food safety standards at the institute.
