Assam is taking a major step toward modernizing its public transit infrastructure. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses are now integrated with the Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) to improve commuter safety and operational efficiency across the state.

Key Features of the ITMS Upgrade

  1. Real-Time GPS Tracking: Passengers and operators can monitor bus locations live, enabling more accurate travel planning and reduced wait times at stops.
  2. Automated Ticketing & E-Payments: Digital ticketing options streamline boarding and eliminate the need for cash transactions.
  3. Enhanced Passenger Safety: Buses are now equipped with emergency panic/SOS buttons connected directly to central control rooms, alongside live CCTV surveillance to strengthen security—particularly for women travelers.
  4. Optimized Scheduling: Fleet data allows ASTC to improve route management, reduce delay frequency, and optimize scheduling during peak hours.
