Poomani, born P. Manickavasagam (with Poolithurai being his father's name), was an esteemed Tamil writer and recipient of the 2014 Sahitya Akademi Award. He passed away at the age of 79. His celebrated work, 'Agnaadi,' is a monumental novel portraying the communal riots in Sivakasi (1899) and Kazhugumalai (1895), reflecting profound social narratives.
Beyond his literary career, Poomani proved his multifaceted creativity by directing the National Film Development Corporation of India's film, Karuvelam Pookkal.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced that Poomani would be honoured by the state, in recognition of his significant contribution to Tamil literature and culture.
