Residents near the Geleki oil field in Assam's Sivasagar district have reported ongoing underground gas emissions lasting seven days, with the leak originating at a local broiler farm.
The leak has spread across nearby areas, enveloping the vicinity in a strong gas odor and prompting fears of a major accident comparable to the previous Baghjan oil well blowout.
Despite intervention by ONGC teams who initiated excavation efforts, the exact source of the leak remains unidentified, and fresh gas seepage has reportedly been detected near another oil well.
Precautionary measures including fire tenders deployment and advisories against open flames have been issued, though residents report inadequate support for essential needs.
Calls have been made by local groups for immediate action, warning of possible protests to stop drilling activities should the leak continue.c
