The Tamil Nadu government has filed a petition with the Supreme Court to overturn a Madras High Court order that imposes an absolute ban on the slaughter of cows and calves. The government argues that the High Court's decision disregards provisions in the Tamil Nadu Animal Preservation Act of 1958, which permits the slaughter of older and unfit cattle under certain regulated circumstances.
The government argues that the High Court's directions of 27th May effectively impose a blanket prohibition not envisaged under the existing law and interfere with the state's authority to implement its legislation. It has therefore sought the Supreme Court's intervention to set aside the order and clarify the legal position.
